High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince who has a pair of beautiful eyes made of blue diamond, clear as the dark sky. However, he gives up the eyes for helping a mom, who can't afford to take her son to see the doctor. The price for saving this poor family is blindness. You may recall a "Happy Prince" appeared in the short story of Oscar Wilde. He returns transformed as an owl.
This is Zeus, a western screech owl. A couple in Sylmar, California rescued him when he flew into their home and hit his head, falling onto their porch in a daze. The owl's fate was changed because of this couple from then on…
There was a good reason why he crashed into the porch as the family found that there was something special about his peculiar eyes. Have a look…
As it turned out, Zeus was completely blind because he was born without lenses or irises, though his beautiful eyes looked like the night sky decorated with stars. The "stars" that actually are tiny specks are probably strands or clumps of collagen floating in the jelly-like vitreous of the eyes.
Most ordinary human homes are not equipped to handle owls. In order to get Zeus some proper help, the couple found a new home for Zeus at the Wildlife Learning Center after getting him checked at the vet.
Sadly, Zeus' blindness cannot be treated, and he can't be released back into the wild, which means he probably has to stay at the center for the rest of this life. But he didn't seem mind and was sort of happy to find a safe place to live.
Owls employ low-light vision to see in the dark that is different from bats and some other nocturnal birds that use echolocation to "see."
Thus eyes are critical to birds of prey of all kinds, for they rely on their incredible vision to hunt and steer clear of predators.
Without eyes, they are unable to acquire food to eat and they'll most likely starve. As such, Zeus's condition can be a life-threatening condition for him.
Luckily, Zeus was being taken well care of at his new home at the wildlife center. Places like that provide help for animals who can't help themselves and give them a second chance to live. Without the assistance, Zeus might die.
Now he has become popular and has his own Instagram account to show his recent state. Zeus seems to have adapted quite well to his new life and gets love from many strangers; he is not a disabled owl but a precious gift from God.
Zeus can't see, but it seems that he can understand what goes on through his incredible eyes. Maybe a swallow living in his heart is telling him what's happening, much like the swallows accompanying the prince thousands of years ago.
